Mobile Dankort

Dankort is a national Danish debit card scheme that was introduced back in 1984 and which has been the dominating card having broad support from retailers, banks and consumers. The card is free to use for the consumer in stores, and has been a major contributor to the drive toward an almost cash-free society.

In early 2017 the Dankort became mobile when Nets together with banks and merchants launched a number of local wallets in the market, allowing both Android and iOS users to connect and pay with their card. This was done without adopting the worldwide EMV NFC standard, which is used for the physical card. Instead the solution is using Unwire Connect based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which allows close proximity pairing between mobile devices and payment terminals and thereby giving more flexibility compared to NFC.

Millions of payments with Unwire Connect

As of January 2019, millions of pairings and payments have been made with mobile Dankort and more than 15.000 payment terminals are now equipped with Unwire Connect. Bluetooth as a pairing method is supported by multiple terminal vendors in more than 80% of all check-out lanes in supermarkets, and it is being used to support other use cases such as loyalty schemes. This removes the need for bringing cash and physical cards to the retail store – the mobile phone will do.

Unwire Connect consists of 3 parts

Client SDK for scanning, proximity detection and two-way  communication between a mobile device and Unwire Connect tapping point. The SDK will use SensorTap for determining the right pairing method and provide confidence levels to the mobile application.

Firmware and hardware specifications for BLE peripherals acting as an Unwire Connect tapping point used for i.e. point of sales.

Cloud back-end analytics platform, providing logging and statistics, device corrections for mobile devices and services.
